Born in 1978, Smay began playing shows at legendary Rochester jazz club Shep's Paradise at 17.
Smay's primarily influences are Jazz, R&B, Rock drummers such as: Buddy Rich, Dino Danelli, Earl Palmer, Ringo Starr, Gene Krupa, Art Blakey, Philly Jo, Davey Tough, & Mitch Mitchell. Jason has previously toured and recorded with such artists as Los Straitjackets, Bo Diddly, Wanda Jackson, the Hi Risers, Dave Alvin, and Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell
